Gift Buddy vs Giftster

Gift Buddy and Giftster compared side by side: platforms, price, claiming, group gifts, Secret Santa and languages, with the cases where Giftster is the better pick.

Facts checked against Giftster's App Store listing and public pages on 23 October 2026. Apps change; tell us if something is out of date.

Who each app is for

Giftster is a family wishlist app. It runs on iPhone, Android and the web, it is free, and it is built around private family groups: everyone joins the group, everyone keeps a list, and members reserve or buy from each other's lists. It also has a Secret Santa draw with exclusions. For a large family that wants one shared place across phones and laptops, that is a clear fit.

Gift Buddy is a free iPhone app (the Android build is in testing) built around people rather than groups. You follow friends and relatives, see their lists in one feed, and get their birthdays as reminders. Each list is private or open to followers you name, and nothing is public. It is a younger product with a smaller user base, and the interface comes in English and Ukrainian.

If you already run a working Giftster group with your relatives, you have a reason to stay. If your gift-giving is spread across friends, partners and family, and everyone has an iPhone, Gift Buddy is worth a look.

Where Giftster is the better pick

You need more than an iPhone. Giftster has Android and web versions. Gift Buddy does not yet, and a browser only opens a shared public profile. In a family where half the people use Android, this decides the question.

You want Secret Santa now. Giftster has a draw with exclusions today. Gift Buddy lists Secret Santa on its roadmap, and we will not pretend it is shipped. Our Secret Santa guide covers how to run one regardless of the app.

You think in family groups. Giftster's private groups are a good model for a family that wants everyone in one place year-round. Gift Buddy has no group container; you follow people individually.

You want an established product. Giftster's iOS listing shows a 4.8 rating from roughly 19,000 ratings. Gift Buddy is young and does not have that track record yet.

Where Gift Buddy is the better pick

You follow people, not groups. Friends, a partner and cousins all land in one feed, and birthdays arrive as reminders with time left to order.

You want to give without being named. A toggle before you claim hides your name from the list owner and keeps the claim visible to everyone else. It is the same logic described in how to prevent duplicate gifts.

You prepare a gift with other people. Up to ten people can join one gift, with an organizer and invitations. No money moves inside the app, which is deliberate; the reasoning is in group gifts without splitting money.

You want Ukrainian. The full interface is available in Ukrainian, and Giftster is English only.

You want nothing sponsored in your feed. The feed is only the people you follow. There are no brand deals.

How to move your list

There is no importer, in either direction. The honest version of moving is this:

  1. Open your Giftster list and copy the link of each item you still want.
  2. In Gift Buddy, create a list, choose who can see it, and paste the links one by one. The title, photo and price fill in from the page.
  3. Add items that had no link by hand.
  4. Share the list with the people who need it by naming them as followers.

Expect a few minutes for a typical list. Claims do not carry over, so if relatives have already reserved things in Giftster, tell them before you switch, or keep both lists running until the holiday has passed.
