A family of twelve has sixty-six pairs of people who might give each other something. That is the real reason December gets loud: not the shopping, but the coordination. One group chat cannot hold sixty-six conversations, so people guess, and guessing produces two identical sweaters and one gift nobody wanted. Here is a system you can set up in an evening, for a large family or an office, that removes the guessing.
Why family gift chats fall apart in December
Every big family has the same chat in the first week of December. Somebody asks what the kids want. Somebody else posts a link. An aunt says "I am getting the scarf" without saying which scarf, or for whom. By the twentieth the thread is three hundred messages long and nobody can find the one that mattered.
The chat fails because it mixes three different jobs: what people want, who is buying what, and keeping the surprise. Separate those jobs and the noise goes away.
Secret Santa, everyone-to-everyone or group gifts: which system fits
Decide this first, before anyone buys a thing. All three work; they fit different sizes and budgets.
Everyone gives to everyone. Fine up to about eight people. Each person keeps a wishlist, everyone follows everyone, and gifts are claimed before they are bought. Beyond eight the number of gifts per person gets expensive and the shopping takes a weekend.
Secret Santa. Each person gives one gift and receives one. It keeps the cost flat and the shopping short, which suits offices. The rules, budgets and the draw are covered in our Secret Santa guide. The one weakness is that your Santa has to guess what you want, unless you keep a list they can read.
One group gift per person. The family chooses one bigger present for each member, with one organizer per gift. Fewer boxes, better boxes, and the kids get the one thing they actually asked for. The method, including how to settle the money without the app, is in how to organize a group gift.
Mixing is normal. Many families do Secret Santa among the adults and a group gift for the grandparents or for each child.
Set it up in one evening
Whichever system you choose, the setup is the same and fits in one evening.
Everyone makes a list for the occasion. In Gift Buddy a wishlist can belong to an event with a date, so make one called "Christmas" or "New Year" rather than adding holiday wishes to a general list. Put a price on each gift and a link where you can. Five tips for building a wishlist explains how many items to add and why to spread the prices.
Decide who sees it. Each list has its own visibility. Only me hides it, you can open it to specific followers, or you can turn on Available to all so anyone with the link can read it. For a family where everyone has the app, picking the relatives by name is usually right. If some relatives will read the list in a browser, set it to Available to all. For an office Secret Santa, open the list to everyone taking part.
Follow each other. Following is one-way and instant, with nothing to approve. Search by nickname, phone number or the short ID in the profile. For the whole family this is a ten-minute job on the first evening, done once.
Claim before you buy. This is the rule that replaces the chat. When you decide to buy something from someone's list, open it and tap Fulfill. The gift moves to In Progress for everyone else and cannot be claimed twice. The owner sees the status change but not your name. The mechanics are explained in how claiming prevents duplicate gifts, and they work the same in a family of six or an office Secret Santa.
Budgets and deadlines
Two numbers keep a big season calm.
The first is a budget per gift, agreed in advance. A price on every wishlist item makes it easy: givers claim within the budget and nobody has to ask "how much is too much".
The second is a claim deadline. Pick a date about two weeks before the holiday, after which everything left unclaimed is fair game for a group gift or gets dropped. Without a deadline, the expensive items sit unclaimed until the last week and somebody panics.
If the family is on the free plan, note the limits: five follows and nine active gifts per person. Five follows means everyone-to-everyone works on the free plan only up to six people; in a bigger family, follow the people you actually give to, and remember that Secret Santa needs just one follow. A fulfilled gift frees its slot, so a holiday list that gets claimed and done does not pile up against the cap.
For the relatives who will not install anything
Every family has them. A grandparent, a teenager who refuses on principle, an uncle who does not do apps.
They can still take part in two ways. First, every Gift Buddy profile has a public link that opens in a browser, so any list set to Available to all is readable on any phone or laptop without installing anything. Lists shared with chosen followers stay in the app. Send the link in a message and they can see what the kids want.
Second, someone who does use the app can keep a list on their behalf. A parent adds the grandparents' wishes to a dedicated list and shares it with the family. The grandparents never touch the app, and the family still claims before buying. Those gifts count toward the parent's own nine active gifts on the free plan.
On the day
Two small features earn their place on the holiday itself.
If a gift arrives and the giver forgot to mark it done, the owner can close it with I got the gift, so the list stays accurate for next time. And when a gift lands well, the owner can send a thank-you note with a photo from the gift itself. Only the person who gave it sees the note, which makes it a better thank-you than a message in the family chat.
By the time the paper is in the bin, every gift is marked done, every list is clean, and the January chat can go back to arguing about where to spend Easter.
Start before the first week of December
The whole system depends on lists existing before people start shopping. Make yours this week, send the family the link, and ask everyone to add five things with prices. If you are new to the app, the guide to every screen walks through lists, following and claiming in ten minutes.
Gift Buddy is free to start on iPhone. The Android version is in testing.
